Are you trying new skills and struggling?

A lovely article from Justin Wise on how we categorise the stages of our life can be so limiting.  We forget that learning something new can feel like we’ve lost our way or we are completely failing.  Beating ourselves up this way doesn’t help us learn new skills, try a new way of responding to the person who winds us up or to develop skills in thinking strategically.

No one learned to ride a bike without getting on the bike, grazing their knees a few times, without crashing and they certainly didn’t learn it from reading a book or watching you tube!

So why do we expect trying a new behaviour or approach to be successful first time?  Why do we beat ourselves up?  Next time you catch yourself try smiling to yourself and saying (quietly!) “I’m proud, that is me learning and growing”.

How are you categorising where you are in life at the moment?  Is it helping you or hindering?

  1. Right now I’m learning a new skill (sales). I know it’s going to help me in the long run, but right now it seems like I have so far to go… Setting small goals for myself as I go. I find it helps to set smaller goals. Great post!

    1. Thank you for commenting. I quite agree with your small steps – and celebrating that you are a learner who is brave enough to give it a go! Good luck with learning sales!
